چکیده

Since the second half of the XX century, the measures implemented in endemic countries to control Chagas disease (CD) have succeeded in reducing its incidence. Nevertheless, there are still regions where vector-borne transmission endures (Bolivia, Paraguay, Mexico, etc.) and therefore new cases of infection occur in the younger population. The WHO estimates that there are about 10 million individuals with CD worldwide. Although there have been improvements in the diagnosis and management of these patients, pharmacological treatment continues to be suboptimal and is not free of toxicity. Furthermore, early diagnosis is difficult, which is in part due to the absence of standardised screening and management programmes even within each country. Due to the effects of campaigns to control the disease in endemic regions and the influence of migration patterns, vertical transmission now accounts for 22% of all new infections. It is estimated that more than 8000 children are born each year with infection by Trypanosoma cruzi, and

The importance of the multidisciplinary approach to deal with the new epidemiological scenario of Chagas disease (global health).

There are currently two major factors that have modified the epidemiology of Chagas disease in the last decades: climate change and migration flows. In this new scenario, there are new challenges to control and prevent Trypanosoma cruzi infection in endemic countries, such as the control of a wider distribution of triatomine vectors or the reinforcement of vertical transmission programs. In non...

Mother-child transmission of Chagas disease: could coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus increase the risk? Transmissão materno-fetal da doença de Chagas: poderia a co-infecção com vírus da imunodeficiência humana aumentar o risco?

A study was conducted on all newborns from mothers with Chagas disease who were attended at Hospital Donación F. Santojanni between January 1, 2001, and August 31, 2007. Each child was investigated for the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi parasitemia through direct examination of blood under the microscope using the buffy coat method on three occasions during the first six months of life. Serologi...

As of June 2011, 258 cases have been diagnosed, mostly adults in the indeterminate phase of the chronic stage of the disease. Vertical transmission has been i...

In vitro Anti-epimastigote Activity of some Iranian Medicinal Plants

Some medicinal plants are a potential source of new drugs, in order to improve the treatment of Chagas disease whose treatment is still a challenge. In this study, the in vitro anti-epimastigote activity of certain fractions of Achillea biebersteinii, A. millefolium, Satureja mutica and S. macrantha was evaluated. Diethyl ether fractions of Achillea species and acetone fractions of Satureja spe...

Vertical transmission of BK virus in pregnancy: A narrative review

Background: Primary infection with the BK virus occurs in the tonsils and is transmitted to other tissues and organs, especially the kidneys, by infecting monocytes. Infection with this virus is rarely associated with clinical disease but reactivating the virus in people who have a suppressed immune system can cause kidney or bladder damage. Due to the importance of activating the BK virus in s...
